Moira Duggan

Moira Duggan draws on more than 20 years' experience working with top-rank publishers. In working with writers, she seeks to inspire and assist them in producing works that will earn praise from readers and reviewers alike. Excellence of content and peak marketability are her criteria for a job well done.

She will tailor her approach to provide whatever help you need to advance your nonfiction project. (For longer projects, a preliminary letter of agreement ensures complete understanding as to the nature of the service to be provided, the time allowed for it, and the amount and schedule of payment. The work is performed solely by Moira Duggan and is not subcontracted to other editors. The standards of the CEA Code of Ethics strictly apply.)

These are the qualities she considers necessary in a 'book doctor':

  • judgment

  • tact

  • commitment

  • reliability

  • flexibility

  • organizational skills

  • wide general knowledge

  • respect for schedules

  • an eye for attractive presentation

  • an ear for language

  • attention to the internal consistency of facts and viewpoint.

SHORT APPRAISAL:  For manuscripts still in proposal or outline form, the Short Appraisal (300 to 500 words at a fixed fee) evaluates content, writing style, development, and organization.

DETAILED CRITIQUE:  This report analyzes the manuscript from beginning to end, with attention to content, writing style, organization, completeness, and factual soundness. It points out pitfalls such as repetitions, contradictions, overspecialized vocabulary, trite expressions, and errors of syntax and spelling. It offers solutions in all matters where there is room for improvement. The Detailed Critique typically runs 10 pages for every 100 pages of manuscript; it is billed at an hourly rate.

MANUSCRIPT REVISION:  Some Clients choose to revise the manuscript themselves, following suggestions in the Detailed Critique. In such cases, the Editor's job is finished, except for occasional consultations as work progresses.  Or, the Client may prefer to have the Editor produce the final, revised manuscript, rewriting and reordering as necessary, doing line editing (paragraph and sentence structure) and copy editing (syntax, spelling, punctuation). The work may be billed at an hourly rate or at a flat fee, as agreed between Client and Editor. The cost of word processing the manuscript or of inputting changes on disk, if handled by the Editor, will be billed to the Client.

GHOSTING, AS-TOLD TO:  Moira Duggan is a published writer of nonfiction, with eight books to her credit. She has worked also as a collaborator and ghost writer and will consider such assignments in projects of exceptional potential.
